"Probably 'cause they're willing to do shit like experiment on people to make the discoveries faster," Bucky pointed out. His tone was one of dark humour, but pain haunted his gaze.
He flexed the hand again as she stepped back, oddly disappointed she'd broken the contact. He wasn't used to being touched anymore, but it wasn't as bad as he'd expected it would be.
"It was created in the second world war, but the scientist who made it was killed and I guess he hadn't made any notes or anything, because they only ever used it the once on Steve. Captain America." Bucky shrugged. "The head of the Nazi science division got his hand on an uncompleted version and used it on himself, turned himself into a monster called the Red Skull. I guess HYDRA was trying to recreate it, but the stuff they used on me wasn't as good as the real thing."

He recited the list of things he'd heard techs talking about over his head, figuring it would probably mean more to her than it did to him. "Faster metabolism, denser muscles, enhanced speed, power, and reflexes. It does stuff in my head, too, changes my brain chemistry or stimulates different places, so I think faster, I guess. Doesn't feel like that most of the time, but it does seem like I'm able to track things and plan better in battles."
