Welcome to the Illyria!

Stardate 58561.8: Day One

Now that you've all got your room assignments and communicators, it's time to explore this ship. Please check out the deck plans to figure out where you're going. You can read about some of the existing crew members you might run into here.

Even those of you who may feel right at home on a spaceship will find that the Illyria is definitely a bit... different. Mostly because she's kind of a wreck right now. Whatever it was that threw the ship all the way out here to wherever we are, it really did a number on the ship itself. There's a lot of damaged areas, and several of the ship's systems have been compromised. You'll find that the replicators don't always work right (I asked for hasperat and I got pok tar!?), the turbolifts are unusually persnickety (I said bridge, not engineering!), and the environmental controls in your quarters may not do as they're told (why is it snowing in Room 4J?). Several corridors are blocked by debris, and more often than not the lights are flickering if they're on at all.

So what will you do? Help clean up the mess in the hallways? Try some bizarre alien food in the mess hall? Try and infiltrate restricted areas to get a peek at the ship's systems? Feel free to make your own top level comment, and treat this as a big mingle. Get to know your new crewmates, explore your new home, make friends or enemies, and whatever you do, don't try the gagh. If you need the captain or the first officer, please let a mod know, but try and stick to threading with your fellow new recruits!

(Don't worry about the entry tags for the moment, they will be added shortly. Before we throw ourselves into missions on alien planets, we wanted everyone to have a chance to get to know one another, so please use this opening log as an opportunity to kick off some CR with crewmates and bunk buddies, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask a mod!)

"I'm afraid I couldn't find any fillings so they are just plain rice and a bit of salt." Julia Child she is not, for Yamato is always apologizing even for her most splendid meals. "I consider myself lucky to get even that-one crewman did not look closely at what he had been given and had to be carried to the infirmary when it disagreed with him."

Once again, Yamato found herself flustered. "Ah, I'm sorry if you are not used to it. That is Ramune, a drink which is something like carbonated lemonade. It is uh...not from this ship's stores. I had it with me." Yamato smoothed the truth over a bit there-she had her own bottling plant of the stuff squirreled away inside her hull. But explaining the nature of how that worked was a lot of trouble.

Her eyes widened, then narrowed in confusion. She couldn't make any of what he'd just said make sense. Even if Bucky didn't know that Steve was dead and he was referring to something that had happened during the war, she couldn't figure out what incident he could be referring to. "What do you mean?"

Peggy chuckled. "Yes, I'm sure you're right." She's also not that concerned for her own safety, and people do need help. "I'm still unsure that this place is as benign as they pretend to be."

That's definitely part of why she's having some uncertainty about B'Elanna's rank. "Lieutenant, then," she says agreeably, inclining her head, then she sobers. "You're new as well? But you do seem like you belong here."

Not for a moment had Bucky considered her weak. Though it might have been true that his polite offer to help was prompted by her being a woman, that wasn't because he thought that made her automatically weak. It was because his ma would have tanned his backside with a peach switch for not offering help to a struggling lady.

He'd still have helped a guy, he'd probably just have ribbed them about it instead of being polite. Everyone had physical strength limits, and that chunk looked too heavy for anyone without super strength.

Fortunately, Bucky had super strength and an extra powerful mechanical arm. Though muffled by the fabric hiding it, the arm made a few faint pneumatic sounds as he casually hefted the debris and set it aside, out of the way.

"Anything else I can help with?" he asked as he turned back to her. He kept his distance, out of reach and peering at her through a curtain of obscuring hair, the habit of hiding his face still too ingrained. "I dunno much 'bout electrical and mechanical things, but I can't just sit around cooling my heels."

The time difference thing still had him turned around; it didn't really occur to him that she wouldn't know Steve was alive.

Or that he maybe shouldn't be telling her so, in case she did get back to her own time and then messed things up by finding him too early. Then again, she already knew Bucky was alive, and was just as likely to save him too early.

If there was such a thing as 'too early', in his case.

"HYDRA sent me to kill him. I nearly did, but he saved me and I... It woke me up. Brought me back to myself enough that I ran. I been running ever since, trying to stay away from HYDRA and the authorities. But I never wanna fight him again."

Yeah... underscores would have helped.

It had been hell. Even now, two years later, she still had nightmares. Still found herself hoarding food when there wasn't much of a reason to. Still found herself scanning every possible exit and trying to ascertain every possible threat when she entered a room. UNIT training had helped make her better at it. But having a lead position at UNIT also helped her heal.

Martha sipped her tea with a grimace though. "I had no choice but to stop them. And him. I was the only one who could even though I didn't sign up for it. Not then."

Martha nods. "I haven't made up my mind yet on that account. Still, they were willing to check us over medically when we got here. We're not being held prisoner. We're not being forced to work at gunpoint." Something about the way she says it suggests Martha is a little more familiar with what she's saying than she should be.

"But it doesn't hurt to stay on our toes."

Bucky would have understood any and all of those behaviours, all too well. "Good on you for stepping up when it counted," he said, quiet but intense. "Too many people don't, when push comes to shove. And the ones that do, never get enough respect for it. I'm sorry you had to suffer for it as a result."

Martha smiled, though it held little warmth. "I don't know. When so few are left, they all tend to do what they can. Too many people sacrificed their lives for me, so I could escape and finish my task." Even during the recent Dalek invasion, her commanding officer had died so she could get out.

An eyebrow arched delicately at the mention of this 'Kongo', though she let it pass; they weren't going anywhere anytime soon, and the intimate knowledge of Yamato's history and relations would be revealed all in good time. With one exception: TEA, was taken only at traditional intervals, and decidedly NOT at every hour of the day...who WAS this person the battleship knew?

A nod. "Indeed. I hope so." A beat. "What time do you take supper? I could meet you at the canteen at 18:00. You could show me what's palatable out of that 'replicator' nonsense."

"In some cases, yes." Luke didn't elaborate too much, but he knew of a few cases. A few creatures used it to hunt. And then there were ysalamiri, which were his main reason for caution. He couldn't exactly spill anything about a Force-blocking creature to someone he didn't know well. Of course, it was impossible to know if they'd run across the galaxy he was from, let alone the creatures' habitat.

Luke nodded at the pocket dimension comment. There were rumors of places in the galaxy that were something like that, although Luke had never been into one yet. The Rift might be somewhat similar, but not completely. "It could be, yeah."

"We've just always called it the Galaxy." he replied. "There are probably millions of planets and systems, though there are a few that might reasonably be known by others. Coruscant, the capital...Corellia...unfortunately where I grew up, Tattooine, was known for a lot of the wrong reasons inside the galaxy. I can't say much about outside."

The only extra-galactic life forms known so far were the Yuzhaan Vong, which weren't all that friendly, and possibly the Rusaan...Luke did wonder about humans, if they were also found outside the galaxy as he was seeing, but no one knew for sure.

Mack's opinion on his current mental state is a bit more sketchy. It gets like that when the last thing you remember is your dead team-mate trying to convince you that you weren't responsible for his death.

His right hand flexes slightly, almost feeling the bullet, the symbol of his debt owed to Hector, as he glances up at his company, before looking back out to the stars.

"Nice view, though."

Mack was mostly lost in his own thoughts, mostly commenting to himself, but...

"...Did you say you've been on something like this?"

And he's turning to face Martha, looking a bit shocked.
got_it_memorized: (uhm...//that was unexpected)

i am so sorry this is so late!!

Oof, don't give him that mental image, sheesh!

Axel arched one eyebrow at her words.

"Gumdrops?" Seriously? They had Gummi Ships where she came from? "The ones I'm familiar with are kinda like gumdrops, too. That's unexpected..." He tapped his chin. "What's the name'a your world?" he asked. "Who knows? I might have actually visited it, in that case. Can't imagine too many places have spaceships made out'a candy."
got_it_memorized: (are you pondering what I'm pondering?)

[personal profile] got_it_memorized 2016-08-10 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Axel jumped back as she spat out the liquid, then cracked up laughing. It wasn't really derisive laughter, but her reaction was just so comical! He didn't know who Betty Ford was, but Louise Greenlee, at least, was quite entertaining.

He reached for the glass, swiping the pad of his little finger against the inside of the lip and then bringing it to his face to sniff it. He scrunched up his nose.

"Eull," he said, shaking his head. "Not much of a drinker, myself," he admitted. "Tastes like spicy wood, you ask me. I'll stick to tea and OJ." He waved a hand. "That's tea, comma, and OJ, not tea and OJ together. Though... that might not be awful." There was tea and lemonade, after all, which was quite tasty, in his opinion.
got_it_memorized: (i'm sure i don't know)

sorry so slow!!!

[personal profile] got_it_memorized 2016-08-10 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
If he throws that boot, he's not getting it back. Just sayin'.

For what it's worth, Axel isn't much of a social butterfly either. He's charismatic and garrulous and one might even call him friendly on a good day, but he's fiercely private and slow to trust, and that makes friendships a bit complicated. However, there is a benefit to making allies, he'd definitely agree; the trick is to make sure you're making the right ones.

Watching the strange fuzzy literally four-eyed man put his boot back on, he holds his hands up again, as if to remind him he's unarmed, and then slowly backpedals out of the room.

"Very well," he says, lingering just outside the open doorway. "Disaché, you said? I'm Axel, and for what it's worth, that wasn't deliberate breaking and entering. Seems something about this place has thrown off the finer calibrations of my portals."
got_it_memorized: (aaactually...)

kindly pardon my tardis-- i mean tardiness. ;D

"The doctor?" Axel echoed, tilting his head. The ship's doctor? He hadn't seen him in the infirmary, and he wasn't wearing a uniform. A civilian doctor? No, he was one of the displaced folks, like himself, surely, otherwise why would he be here in the passenger quarters with him? "Doctor... who?"

Sitting up straighter and letting his legs dangle over the edge of the bed, Axel looked thoughtful for a moment.

"Well," he said, tilting his head. "I encountered a girl who could probably bench press the engineering equipment, a lush detective, and a talking baboon with four eyes." He regarded the Doctor with a somewhat puzzled look. "I'd say that's at least moderately interesting. You?"

With a snooty sniff, Disaché stands up and resettles his tunic with a few quick brushes, saving himself from wrinkles and invisible dirt. Then he plants himself firmly in the doorway, as if his small build could block Axel from entering if he wanted.

"Axel," he repeats, along with a light tap of his left index finger against his thumb. His cochlear implant snaps a quick picture of Axel, tagging it with his name and storing it in his contacts list so he doesn't actually have to remember it.

"Right, portals..." His expression finally slips from irritation into clinical curiosity. "What was that?"

"Yes. Well. Kind of. It was a few years behind. Many years behind." She frowns. "This is pretty state of the art compared to the Pentallion."

She snorted lightly. "If you like that sort of thing," came the reply, "Nothing but darkness, peppered occasionally by stars and the odd planet or two..."

Pushing herself off the railing, she made her way over to the man, extending a hand to him. "Detective Sergeant Louise Gardiner," she stated. "'S a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mr--?"

Betty Ford was, by all accounts, a lovely American First Lady, but she'd become famous for her alcoholism, and later, the rehab center which bore her name. The term just seemed fitting to the older cop upon 'savouring' the nasty liquid which was still, inexplicably, burning a path down her throat. She could almost feel the burn hit her intestines.

Louise sneered. "It tastes worse than spicy wood," she said. "'Shite' is a better description." At the mention of tea, though, her expression brightened somewhat. "Oh? A drinker of tea, are you?" Eyes narrowed a fraction. "How do you normally like to take it?"

Peggy hesitated. The more he explained, the less that made sense. Maybe Bucky was misunderstanding something, or misremembering something. "But Bucky..." she said gently, picking her words as best she could. "I'm very sorry but... Steve died. His plane went down shortly after you were lost. HYDRA couldn't've sent you to kill him."
nobettycarver: (Field work)

[personal profile] nobettycarver 2016-08-11 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Mmm," Peggy said with a nod, a sound of both cautious agreement and uncertainty at the same time. "We don't seem to be prisoners, it's true. And they have been very kind. I do want to believe that they're nothing more than peaceful explorers, as they claim. And I hope it's true."

She paused, then smiled, giving in to her curiosity. "So you do sound like you're from England. What time did you come from?"

It finally dawned on Bucky that she didn't know. He was brought up short, looking down at her with his brow furrowed, trying to quickly sort through what she would and wouldn't know, and what he should tell her.

"Steve survived the crash," he told her. "He was frozen, but the serum kept him alive. They dug him out a few years ago, and when they thawed him, he woke up." So the history books and the Smithsonian said. Bucky had no reason to disbelieve them.
