commencing countdown...

Characters: All passengers!
Stardate: 58575.3
Location: Hoitu’yunia
Summary: The passengers land on their first planet.
Warnings: Please warn for anything graphic in subject lines.

Planet: Hoitu’yunia, Class M planet
People: Hoitu

Welcome to your first planet, space explorers. The Illyria lands, somewhat roughly, on the planet, though considering what the ship has been through, things really go about as well as can be expected. Anyone who steps off the ship will find themselves on a seemingly endless beach, greeted by the smell of the sea and a warm breeze. Here, they will find the Hoitu people, and an interesting environment and with exciting locations to explore.

[The People]

The Hoitu people are hospitable and friendly, willing to lend a hand to passengers with problems or trades. They are an amphibious lifeform bearing some resemblance to frogs. It is as unadvisable and inaccurate to call them “frog people,” however, as it would be to call a human a “hairless ape.” Although they may have similar creatures in their remote evolutionary ancestry, they are biologically different organisms.

Like the frogs of earth, they have long, strong back legs with exceedingly stretchy tendons, allowing them to jump seemingly impossible distances with ease. Their webbed hands and feet have distinct and defined fingers, allowing them to manipulate their environment in a more sophisticated way. Their skin is smooth, slick, and coated in mucus, and their eyes are large- taking up about two- thirds of their face.

[Social]

Within their villages, the Hoitu see no need for clothing and have no nudity taboo. When hunting or traveling in the forests, however, they are known to don special suits to protect them from the sun and heat.

Their food is heavily meat-based and they consider several forms of insects a delicacy. Discussions with the elders of the coastal community reveal that they are members of a nontraditional group, created in response to political strife. As a result of their departure from their traditional environments, they have been cut off from many of their previous primary food source. Now, they experiment with new forms of seafood, and hunt. Some attempts have also been made to establish trade relations with the parent population, with limited success.

[Locations]

I. The beach

The beaches are spotted with large outcroppings of limestone, sometimes along the coast itself and sometimes jutting out from the ocean. These have been known to take a variety of strange shapes and local lore has sprung up around them, linking them with mythological-historical events and cultural heroes. This place, frankly, is a travel agent's dream.

In fact, you might want to come back later, after you've explored a bit. There's plenty to see, after all, from the stunning limestone formations along the coast, to the bioluminescent algae in the tide that the Hoitu rave about.

II. The coastal village

Some distance down the beach from the landing site is the village of Kalia'yunia, a coastal settlement built in the shallows themselves, its buildings sitting on posts to keep them from flooding.

The Hoitu are a welcoming and friendly people, placing a high value on hospitality. While this particular settlement is far from wealthy, they are quick to offer their guests anything they may need (I hope you like seafood).

The water in the center of the village seems to the center of everyday life, and it is there that you can find the market, the place of honor of the village elders, the playgrounds of the youngest villagers, and just about every other aspect of public life. There are a few wooden platforms for the Hoitu to rest upon, of course, but you will likely make much more use of them than they do.

III. Limestone coastal caves

In some areas along the coast, the limestone in the local bedrock has been worn away by the tides, creating caves and underground rivers which extend far into the mainland. Some of these cave systems are certainly accessible, but be careful! Getting lost in them is dangerous and drowning in the process of reaching is a real possibility, particularly around high tide.

IV. Exploring inland- the rainforest

The truly adventurous may even wish to travel a ways inland, to explore the tropical rainforest; it is a tempting destination, teeming with life as it is. But both the Hoitu and your concerned commanding officers will advise you not to venture too far in, especially without a guide. It is far too easy to get lost and far too dangerous to do so.

"We're not friends."

Tony's voice was flat and impersonal.

"Not now. Not because we fought a tentacle monster. Not ever. So don't expect that."

Even as the natives cleaned up the mess, Tony forced himself to ignore Barnes' injuries. Because there was saving the world...and saving your soul. Tony didn't know which was which anymore.

"I'm sorry you're hurt. But...get yourself cleaned up."

"Friends?" That was the last thing Bucky had expected. He stared at Stark, trying to figure out where that comment had come from. "I didn't protect you because we're friends. That's not..."

What could he even say to that?

It really wasn't the sort of thing he could explain. If Stark didn't get it already, Bucky had no idea how to get it through to him.

"I'm glad you're okay," he said instead, sighing. "I'm not your enemy, Stark. Not anymore." Turning, he headed back to the village, not realizing he could have called for a transport from where he was.

"You do make a compelling argument," she replied with a frown.

As he described the serum, Martha listened with equal parts fascination, sympathy, and indignation. How anything like that could be created and not kill someone was an incredible achievement. She eyed him again with an evaluating eye.

"None of that should be possible," she remarked. "How long did it take for you to adjust?"

The fur on the back of Disaché's neck stands on end as Axel suddenly looms next to him. What is with tall people and sneaking up on him?! He shoots him a sidelong glare.

"You're almost as bad as Aeront," he says, wiping at the corner of his mouth with a thumb then licking it clean. "And my name isn't 'champ'."

“Hard to say. Tracking time wasn’t really something I was capable of, and they were giving it to me in doses, not all at once like they did to Steve. More than days, less than years. Probably closer to months than weeks.”

They’d also been in the process of breaking him, using the destabilization of his body as one more method of keeping him confused and off balance. Other methods had included not letting him sleep until he literally passed out, not feeding him, pumping him full of mind-altering drugs, and many other factors that made it difficult to know when one day passed into the next.

Again, he shook the memories off, focusing on better things. “Steve said he was able to run and fight right after the serum, but it took him a couple months to really get the hang of it. Bigger change for him than me – he was a scrawny little punk, five foot four and a hundred pounds soaking wet, but after the change he’s bigger than I am now.”

"Ready!" His excitement was difficult to contain as they entered the forest. Lucky for them there were some trails they could follow. Although the heat wasn't affecting the Doctor as greatly as it was for Martha, he could still register it was rather humid.

Eagerly entering in, the Doctor looks around takes in his surroundings. It's quiet, but it was still only the edges of the forest. The further they walk in, he begins to hear some birds and movement of the leaves around them.

That didn't sound good. Luke had been lucky, the rebels had decent access to good medical care and medical droids, even if things weren't nearly as extensive as what the Empire had at its disposal. And once the New Republic was in place, things were fairly easy. Granted, it wasn't always easy to find help on a mission or during the war with the Yuzhaan Vong, that was why Luke had tried to familiarize himself with the inner workings enough to make do in a pinch.

"That wouldn't be a good thing. You're lucky if you didn't get into too much trouble with it." he replied.

"I imagine so...there's probably quite a bit they can do in their med ward. And it might even happen that we have or pick up someone who's good enough with that kind of thing to help you out."

"Oh, huh." She could sleep while... still doing stuff? Kind of seemed to defeat the purpose of sleeping if you asked him, but to each their own, he guessed. He held his hands up like he surrendered when she assured him she wasn't joking. "Okay," he said quickly, smiling a little. "I get it--food ain't a game. I'm just a little surprised. You must have a helluva metabolism." Sheesh, and people were envious of how he could pack ice cream away and never gain an ounce--this girl could eat a week's worth of food in one sitting? Where did she put it? He couldn't deny a little curiosity.

Turning, he waved a hand.

"Well, come on, then," he said, "let's go see what we can find. I mean, they know we're not exactly from around here and don't have any of the local munny, but we've still gotta eat, right? So maybe they'll cut us a break. Can't hurt to try."

"It is strange. I know that. I am not human-I am a warship. I have different rules." Some of them were arbitrary and strange, but some were...useful.

"I do not think it is really metabolism. I am..." She paused, unsure how to demonstrate and then reached down to pluck something from a bandoleer on her thigh. "Hold out your hand, I want you to hold this." She had grabbed something that looked like a large white bullet, pointed nose, cylindrical body, with a black stripe painted around the base. She held it out to him, gripping it between thumb and forefinger. This was a bit of a parlor trick really, but nobody should be hurt by it.

Yeah, no. She doesn't believe that for an instant.

Tony will be rewarded with a rolling of her eyes and will swiftly be ignored. The engineer turning around and deciding to walk away.

"A dame?"

She wasn't sure whether to be insulted or amused. She also snorted at his attempt at a recovery.

"You've never seen a bathing suit before? When are you from? The Dark Ages?"

B'Elanna really found that hard to believe, and suspected he was just trying to cover up for his misdeed. Though he wouldn't be the first man to stare at a woman in a bathing suit.

Scooting over to allow him a place to sit, B'Elanna draws her kneed up and places her arms over them. Giving Axel a light smile in return. She can be friendly when she wants to be. She isn't always a crab.

When he offers his hand, he takes it and gives his hand a shake.

"That's right." Her smile turning a bit more amused at his words. "It helps to come with a reputation, and to have worked on a ship just like that one." She nods towards the Illyria.

"By your standards? Probably." Bucky rubbed at the back of his neck, trying to push away his embarrassment and not succeeding very well. Was this how Steve had always felt, back then? Awkward and gangly and nervous? No wonder his best friend had lousy luck with the ladies.

"I was born in 1917. Live most of my life in that era." He shrugged, dropping his hand again and stuffing them both in his pockets. Just so he had something to do with them.

"Mostly I was just trying to hide it." Hence him wondering now if it could be made to look more human. And yet... "Not sure I want to, if I don't have to, though. It's part of me, now. I may be Bucky Barnes again, but the Winter Soldier is still in there, too. I'll never really be free of him... and trying to pretend like it never happened seems, I dunno. Disrespectful."

As if he was brushing aside all the lives he'd taken, all the innocent people who had died because of the Soldier's actions.

Ugh. People were so quick to just take the lowest technical solution to their problems. Like using two sticks to light a fire when perfectly serviceable lasers existed.

"Barnes!"

He barked the other man's name, and gestured to his chevron badge, swooping discretely on his chest.

"You can't walk back to the ship in your condition. Call for transport."

You dumbass, he didn't add.
fist_of_hydra: (Side-eye)

[personal profile] fist_of_hydra 2016-09-04 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
He might not have said it, but Bucky heard it loud and clear. And, oddly, that was what won a wry half-grin out of him. Or perhaps not so oddly - if it had been Steve scolding him, the insult definitely would have been audible.

Tapping his badge, Bucky waited for the chirp. "Uh, can you beam me to sickbay from here?" At the affirmative, he braced himself for the unnerving column of gold to surround him.

Just before it appeared, he flipped a smirk at the other man. "Careful, Stark. Almost sounds like you care." Then he was gone, ensuring he got the last word.
aes_thetic: (Bitch plz)

[personal profile] aes_thetic 2016-09-04 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
"...And a double dumb-ass on you," Tony muttered back, just as Barnes dissolved into a cascade of sparkles.

What the hell kind of world was it where the weapon that killed his mother and father was more human than most people he'd met? That was just....wrong. Fuck. Hopefully the frogmen had liquor. Tony needed a drink.
snapturtle: (Listening)

[personal profile] snapturtle 2016-09-04 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
"... Oh."

Well, yeah, that explained a lot then wouldn't it? Yet another person that was from an early earth period. Okay then. Clearing her throat a bit, B'Elanna took her towel and wrapped it around herself.

"Better?"
fist_of_hydra: (Tank top)

[personal profile] fist_of_hydra 2016-09-04 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Wha... no, that's not what I..." Startled by her action - and a little dismayed by the loss of the view, if he was being honest - Bucky shook his head. "I didn't mean it was bad. Just, it startled me, but that's still no excuse for being rude."

He gestured to where she'd been sunning on the beach. "You mind some company? Or do you want me to get lost? I was gonna catch some sun, but there's a whole beach I can do it on."

God knew he needed the sun. He was as pale as the ghost some named him; the metal of his arm was darker than his skin around it, and the red star on his shoulder was the only colour he had.

"I actually kind of understand that." Luke nodded. He still always felt that his father was part of him. The darkness, the person who forced his way out after his foolish actions with the reborn Palpatine. The darkness is always part of him.

"Certain things may always be a part of us, but we can learn from them, grow stronger. I think if it leaves us completely, it might lead to more mistakes in the future. It's not easy living with the things that are a part of us, and we have to keep them under control, but maybe they ultimately lead to us being better as people."

Luke would always fight the darkness and it would always be a part of him. But he would let his past remind him of what he needed to avoid in the future.
notrosesshadow: (oh really?)

[personal profile] notrosesshadow 2016-09-05 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Her mouth compressed into a thin line as he talked. Even if he didn't say what he was feeling, Martha was decent enough at reading people. She placed a hand on his forearm. The flesh forearm.

"I'm sorry. It sounds like a horrible experience. I... I hate that there are scientists out there with absolutely no humanity. Just because we believe in facts and wish to see how things work doesn't mean we should forget how to be human."
fist_of_hydra: (Downcast)

[personal profile] fist_of_hydra 2016-09-10 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That was more understanding than Bucky would have expected from a 'normal' person. He eyed Luke, wondering what the other man had been through, had done, that made him understand what it was like to try to live with that kind of darkness inside.

"You really think having done horrible things can make us better people?" Bucky supposed he could sort of get the logic, but he wasn't sure he could accept the conclusion. Nothing about what HYDRA had done to him felt like it had made him 'better' in any way beyond the obvious physical enhancements.
fist_of_hydra: (Hesitant)

[personal profile] fist_of_hydra 2016-09-10 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This time he didn't flinch at the touch, only blinked at her in surprise. "Pretty sure it ain't being a scientist that makes them forget to be human. It's just the excuse they take. Assholes will find a reason to be... er, sorry. Pardon my French."

He flushed as his brain caught up with his mouth. The more he spent time around 'normal' people, the more he was beginning to remember how to be 'normal' - and realizing how much he'd forgotten. Like how to behave in polite company. There was a faint flavour of soap lingering as a memory in his mouth at the thought of his ma's reaction to hearing him use that word around a lady.

"Well, not....Maybe I don't mean it in the general way. Just that we learn from it and hopefully don't repeat it." Luke replied. Of course, someone had to be willing to learn...his father had been too lost and broken, but he'd still been able to be reached.
fist_of_hydra: (Backward glance)

[personal profile] fist_of_hydra 2016-09-10 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not repeating it is the whole reason I'm so glad to be here." Bucky turned his gaze briefly up, searching for the flash of reflected sunlight like a giant star in the daytime sky, where the ship was. "I guess most of the transplants are pissed and wanna go home, but me? I'd stay here forever if I could."

Nobody chasing him. Nobody hunting him. Nobody threatening to take his mind away from him and turn him into a killing machine again. Yeah, life in the distant reaches of time and space was pretty good, as far as Bucky was concerned.
