Welcome to the Illyria!
Now that you've all got your room assignments and communicators, it's time to explore this ship. Please check out the deck plans to figure out where you're going. You can read about some of the existing crew members you might run into here.
Even those of you who may feel right at home on a spaceship will find that the Illyria is definitely a bit... different. Mostly because she's kind of a wreck right now. Whatever it was that threw the ship all the way out here to wherever we are, it really did a number on the ship itself. There's a lot of damaged areas, and several of the ship's systems have been compromised. You'll find that the replicators don't always work right (I asked for hasperat and I got pok tar!?), the turbolifts are unusually persnickety (I said bridge, not engineering!), and the environmental controls in your quarters may not do as they're told (why is it snowing in Room 4J?). Several corridors are blocked by debris, and more often than not the lights are flickering if they're on at all.
So what will you do? Help clean up the mess in the hallways? Try some bizarre alien food in the mess hall? Try and infiltrate restricted areas to get a peek at the ship's systems? Feel free to make your own top level comment, and treat this as a big mingle. Get to know your new crewmates, explore your new home, make friends or enemies, and whatever you do, don't try the gagh. If you need the captain or the first officer, please let a mod know, but try and stick to threading with your fellow new recruits!
(Don't worry about the entry tags for the moment, they will be added shortly. Before we throw ourselves into missions on alien planets, we wanted everyone to have a chance to get to know one another, so please use this opening log as an opportunity to kick off some CR with crewmates and bunk buddies, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask a mod!)

So when he came across someone in a crew uniform struggling to push an oversized chunk of debris away from an access panel, he only hesitated for a moment before forcing himself to speak up. He hated drawing attention to himself, especially official attention, but that hunk of... whatever the fuck the ship was made of... wasn't going to move itself.
"Need a hand?"

But when someone comes up from behind her and offers assistance, she nearly jumps out of her skin, whirling around to stare. A few moments of irritation and sheepishness later, she nods and replies in an exasperated tone.
"Yes... Yes, please.

He'd still have helped a guy, he'd probably just have ribbed them about it instead of being polite. Everyone had physical strength limits, and that chunk looked too heavy for anyone without super strength.
Fortunately, Bucky had super strength and an extra powerful mechanical arm. Though muffled by the fabric hiding it, the arm made a few faint pneumatic sounds as he casually hefted the debris and set it aside, out of the way.
"Anything else I can help with?" he asked as he turned back to her. He kept his distance, out of reach and peering at her through a curtain of obscuring hair, the habit of hiding his face still too ingrained. "I dunno much 'bout electrical and mechanical things, but I can't just sit around cooling my heels."
no subject
"Um... well, fortunately I do. But I know what you mean."
She's not the type to just sit around cooling her heels either.
"There's a lot of cleanup to do though, if that's your thing."

The staring made him uncomfortable. Being the center of attention always made him uncomfortable at best, these days. He glanced away, avoiding her gaze, then made an effort to drag his eyes back to hers. He had to learn how to deal with people again.
"I'll leave you to it, if there's nothing I can do. Uh... though, when you get a minute, and I know that's prob'ly gonna be a month from now, but... it's snowing in my quarters. Like, foot of snow on the floor and the bunks are covered in ice. I dunno if there's a list or something I should be adding that to, somewhere."
no subject
"It's doing what in your room?"
For a moment she thought she hadn't heard him right or that he was pulling her leg, but looking at him... she doubted it.
"That shouldn't be... I'll take a look right now."
The environmental controls are obviously on the fritz but snow? This is something she has to see for herself.

Although, come to think of it, having the temperature go haywire was probably potentially nearly as bad. Wasn’t it supposed to be freezing in space? Or who knew, maybe the ship could bake them all to death if the problems went wide. So maybe she had reason to make it a priority beyond him complaining.
Besides, even if Bucky hadn’t been planning to sleep there, Mack would probably appreciate not freezing his balls off at night.

"We're breathing just fine. But if that snow keeps going, it could cause more damage."
Something she really doesn't want to deal with. Plus she wants to figure out how the hell it was doing that and why it thought it was a good idea.

"It was just an inch or so on the floor when I first came in, 'bout an hour ago, maybe? But it was building up fast." He had no idea what details might be relevant, but it seemed like the kind of thing where knowing more about the situation would be better. "We didn't wanna try to mess with it and maybe make it worse."

Not mentioning names, at least for now. But yeah, she'd already encountered someone who had been trying to 'fix' the lights. Fortunately, that had been taken care of and they're no longer in darkness on this deck.
Once reaching the room, she touched the small panel next to it to open the door.

He'd already met at least one person on this ship who'd probably rather see him dead, after all.
"Mack?" His roommate appeared to have gone out, which was good or the place would have been a little cramped with three of them.
Bucky leaned against the doorframe, reluctant to step into the snow and ice, watching the engineer. "Anything I can do to help? You got a name or rank I oughta be addressing you by, or should I just stick with ma'am?"
