commencing countdown...

Characters: All passengers!
Stardate: 58575.3
Location: Hoitu’yunia
Summary: The passengers land on their first planet.
Warnings: Please warn for anything graphic in subject lines.

Planet: Hoitu’yunia, Class M planet
People: Hoitu

Welcome to your first planet, space explorers. The Illyria lands, somewhat roughly, on the planet, though considering what the ship has been through, things really go about as well as can be expected. Anyone who steps off the ship will find themselves on a seemingly endless beach, greeted by the smell of the sea and a warm breeze. Here, they will find the Hoitu people, and an interesting environment and with exciting locations to explore.

[The People]

The Hoitu people are hospitable and friendly, willing to lend a hand to passengers with problems or trades. They are an amphibious lifeform bearing some resemblance to frogs. It is as unadvisable and inaccurate to call them “frog people,” however, as it would be to call a human a “hairless ape.” Although they may have similar creatures in their remote evolutionary ancestry, they are biologically different organisms.

Like the frogs of earth, they have long, strong back legs with exceedingly stretchy tendons, allowing them to jump seemingly impossible distances with ease. Their webbed hands and feet have distinct and defined fingers, allowing them to manipulate their environment in a more sophisticated way. Their skin is smooth, slick, and coated in mucus, and their eyes are large- taking up about two- thirds of their face.

[Social]

Within their villages, the Hoitu see no need for clothing and have no nudity taboo. When hunting or traveling in the forests, however, they are known to don special suits to protect them from the sun and heat.

Their food is heavily meat-based and they consider several forms of insects a delicacy. Discussions with the elders of the coastal community reveal that they are members of a nontraditional group, created in response to political strife. As a result of their departure from their traditional environments, they have been cut off from many of their previous primary food source. Now, they experiment with new forms of seafood, and hunt. Some attempts have also been made to establish trade relations with the parent population, with limited success.

[Locations]

I. The beach

The beaches are spotted with large outcroppings of limestone, sometimes along the coast itself and sometimes jutting out from the ocean. These have been known to take a variety of strange shapes and local lore has sprung up around them, linking them with mythological-historical events and cultural heroes. This place, frankly, is a travel agent's dream.

In fact, you might want to come back later, after you've explored a bit. There's plenty to see, after all, from the stunning limestone formations along the coast, to the bioluminescent algae in the tide that the Hoitu rave about.

II. The coastal village

Some distance down the beach from the landing site is the village of Kalia'yunia, a coastal settlement built in the shallows themselves, its buildings sitting on posts to keep them from flooding.

The Hoitu are a welcoming and friendly people, placing a high value on hospitality. While this particular settlement is far from wealthy, they are quick to offer their guests anything they may need (I hope you like seafood).

The water in the center of the village seems to the center of everyday life, and it is there that you can find the market, the place of honor of the village elders, the playgrounds of the youngest villagers, and just about every other aspect of public life. There are a few wooden platforms for the Hoitu to rest upon, of course, but you will likely make much more use of them than they do.

III. Limestone coastal caves

In some areas along the coast, the limestone in the local bedrock has been worn away by the tides, creating caves and underground rivers which extend far into the mainland. Some of these cave systems are certainly accessible, but be careful! Getting lost in them is dangerous and drowning in the process of reaching is a real possibility, particularly around high tide.

IV. Exploring inland- the rainforest

The truly adventurous may even wish to travel a ways inland, to explore the tropical rainforest; it is a tempting destination, teeming with life as it is. But both the Hoitu and your concerned commanding officers will advise you not to venture too far in, especially without a guide. It is far too easy to get lost and far too dangerous to do so.

Not exactly. (Although never express that thought in Tony's hearing, he might agree.) But instinct kicked in, and Tony was running for the creature as well. Besides, if it went after Barnes, it'd go after other people too, right? He couldn't let C'thulhu here just run amok.

Pulling on his gauntlet, he ran and fired at the same time, aiming as carefully as he could at the root of the biggest tentacle, the one that was wrapped around Barnes' leg. The water turned white and green with its thrashing, and there was an underwater screech that sounded like a big-rig's air brakes. Another shot, and the tentacle slithered back, releasing Barnes and retreating to nurse the injury.

They didn't have time to retreat, though. Seven more tentacles erupted from the ocean, aimed like baseball bats at its attacker. At Tony.

Tony was firing wildly at every single swipe, hitting some and missing others, cursing loudly the whole time.

Bucky scrambled back to his feet and dove into the fray, twisting and ducking to avoid tentacles and shots from the repulsor. With no range weapon available, the best he could do was lash out physically.

Thankfully, his left arm had enough crushing and wrenching power to grip and hurt the damn thing's tentacles. He was a blur as he fought, planting himself in front of Stark and taking the brunt of the attack, hoping Stark would be able to take care of the tentacles that got around him.

And wouldn't shoot him in the back, but he was fairly certain self-preservation would overcome hatred. There was no way either of them was getting out of this one alone. Once the fight was over was another story.

Self-preservation, sure. He had that in droves. And yeah, he tried very hard not to take pot-shots at his fellow combatants. But he didn't have Friday guiding his hand, so he was having to adjust and do it all manually, something he never really liked.

Then again, he really didn't want Barnes turning on him, either. The gauntlet might dish out some hurt...but that metal arm would end the fight in an instant. Tony was nowhere in the fighting weight that the goddamn Winter Soldier was.

Soon, he was able to scramble back enough to get a clear shot at the water, and he took it, firing blast after blast at where he hoped the body of the beastie was lurking. The tentacles seemed hell-bent on turning Barnes into human tartare, which was not okay. If anybody got the privilege of taking down the bastard, it was Tony, not some nameless anime monster.

The village nearby was erupting with cries, and suddenly there were a good two dozen frog-men storming the beach, brandishing spears and some sort of liquid in leather casks. And when they started throwing the leather casks, they exploded when they hit the water, causing the surface to burn.

"Holy crap!"

The rescue was entirely welcome, and Bucky staggered back away from the waterline as the villagers swarmed the monster. They were clearly well equipped to handle it, despite the primitive weapons, and he was quite happy to leave them to it.

Breathing hard, he came to a stop at a safe distance and took stock of himself. The suckers on the tentacles appeared to have some kind of acidic slime on them, because he had chemical burns everywhere the thing had slapped against him. His ankle was the worst, where the tentacle had been wrapped around him for a good minute or more, and the flesh was swollen and puffy.

Nothing that would kill him - unless there was poison as well as acid, maybe, but the ship could probably heal it all. Assuming Stark didn't now turn on him.

Wary, he eyed the other man. "You hurt? Did it get you?" Stark wouldn't have the Soldier's enhanced healing ability, and the acid might do a lot more damage to him.

There might someday come a moment where there was a bigger case of cognitive dissonance in Tony's life than this. Maybe. But his parents' murderer asking him if he was all right? Yup. Definitely taking the proverbial taco.

He saw those angry chemical burns along Barnes' leg, and tried to hate him for it. Mostly succeeded. Even as the natives drove Cthulhu back into the briny deeps, Tony wanted nothing more than to stand up and march away. But he couldn't.

"Didn't touch me," he said, his tone brusque and annoyed. "Not once. Get your ass back to the ship, the doctor hologram thing can fix you up."

"Good." Bucky sagged with relief, grateful he'd at least managed to do that much. He couldn't go back and fix anything from his past, couldn't undo the harm he'd done to a man who'd been his friend. Couldn't even do anything to make up for it.

The least he could do was keep Howard's son safe, whatever that cost him.

"Thanks for the warning," he added, sincere. "And the save. Honestly, I half expected you to let it take me. Wouldn't have blamed you."

"We're not friends."

Tony's voice was flat and impersonal.

"Not now. Not because we fought a tentacle monster. Not ever. So don't expect that."

Even as the natives cleaned up the mess, Tony forced himself to ignore Barnes' injuries. Because there was saving the world...and saving your soul. Tony didn't know which was which anymore.

"I'm sorry you're hurt. But...get yourself cleaned up."

"Friends?" That was the last thing Bucky had expected. He stared at Stark, trying to figure out where that comment had come from. "I didn't protect you because we're friends. That's not..."

What could he even say to that?

It really wasn't the sort of thing he could explain. If Stark didn't get it already, Bucky had no idea how to get it through to him.

"I'm glad you're okay," he said instead, sighing. "I'm not your enemy, Stark. Not anymore." Turning, he headed back to the village, not realizing he could have called for a transport from where he was.

Ugh. People were so quick to just take the lowest technical solution to their problems. Like using two sticks to light a fire when perfectly serviceable lasers existed.

"Barnes!"

He barked the other man's name, and gestured to his chevron badge, swooping discretely on his chest.

"You can't walk back to the ship in your condition. Call for transport."

You dumbass, he didn't add.

He might not have said it, but Bucky heard it loud and clear. And, oddly, that was what won a wry half-grin out of him. Or perhaps not so oddly - if it had been Steve scolding him, the insult definitely would have been audible.

Tapping his badge, Bucky waited for the chirp. "Uh, can you beam me to sickbay from here?" At the affirmative, he braced himself for the unnerving column of gold to surround him.

Just before it appeared, he flipped a smirk at the other man. "Careful, Stark. Almost sounds like you care." Then he was gone, ensuring he got the last word.

"...And a double dumb-ass on you," Tony muttered back, just as Barnes dissolved into a cascade of sparkles.

What the hell kind of world was it where the weapon that killed his mother and father was more human than most people he'd met? That was just....wrong. Fuck. Hopefully the frogmen had liquor. Tony needed a drink.
