Characters: James "Bucky" Barnes and Axel, Luke Skywalker and The Doctor
Stardate: 58591.8 (Day Twelve)
Location: Hoitu'yunia
Summary: Two sets of intrepid explorers have agreed to embark on fetch quests for the captain. Hilarity probably ensues.
Warnings: Nothing expected, but if something comes up please note in your subject line!

The situation was fairly simple: the coastal colony needed a handful of fairly simple items to sustain their population, but those items were not found in what was considered their landclaims. Thus, they had no choice but to plead their case to the core colony, and negotiations had become increasingly difficult over the past year. Captain Palu was asked to step in and act as an arbitrator to negotiate a long-term agreement between the colonies to allow them to work together to sustain one another, and in return, the coastal colony was willing to impart some information regarding a technology that the Illyria could benefit from.

The negotiation worked out just as simply: if the coastal colony would permit the core colony to fish its waters for tamesis (a firm, lean pink fish with white, mild-flavored meat, which is considered a delicacy among the Hoitu), then the core colony will permit the coastals to hunt and gather on their lands. This resource exchange will occur on the day of the full moon (approximately every two and a half earth weeks).

However, since the full moon occurred only two nights ago, the core colony has decided to allow the coastals one day out of cycle in order to be able to sustain themselves until the next full moon. Those who volunteered to assist in this task have been assigned the following missions:

James Buchanan Barnes and Axel: Since you two appear to specialize in some form of combat where you come from, you are to venture into the thick forests to the north of the core colony to hunt for the elusive pullus, a small wolf-like creature prized for its richly flavored meat and water-repellent fur. The meat can be very easily cured to last over the winter months, and the pelts are made into warm clothes which help keep the mostly-cold-blooded Hoitu warm when the temperature drops. The pullus is about the size of a border collie, and travels in packs of between five and twelve members, usually led by an alpha female. They are not especially aggressive, but are not afraid to bite when threatened, and their jaws can produce nearly a thousand pounds of pressure, so do watch your hands. It is considered safest to pick off smaller, weaker pack members from a distance and retrieve the bodies once the rest of the pack has moved on, since several pullus attacking at once can easily overpower the average humanoid. Two teams of coastal Hoitu will also be hunting in the area; this team is asked to retrieve six to eight carcasses and bring them to the core colony for cataloging.

Luke Skywalker and The Doctor: Due to your more varied skillsets, you are to head to the southwestern corner of the core colony to the Cliffs of Dauberr, where you will find the guaco and jarrinha plants. The guaco is a thornless, viney plant with bright green heart-shaped leaves and small white flowers that smell vaguely of vanilla; the leaves, when crushed, have a spicy smell and are used to aid respiratory maladies. It only grows down the vertical face of the cliff. Jarrinha is also a viney plant, which grows at the base of the cliff and climbs upward. The vine is dark green, and it has serrated leaves and unusual bright purple flowers with an almost cloyingly sweet scent. The thick, fleshy vines can be ground into a paste which is a topical analgesic, and when dried, it can be used as a sedative and a digestive aid. Just be careful when you're cutting the vines--the thick, milky white sap of the older, thicker vines can cause numbness of the hands if contact is made. You may encounter a team of Hoitu who will also be collecting specimens; please retrieve approximately two pounds of guaco flowers, and approximately ten yards of jarrinha vine, and bring them to the core colony for cataloging.

[[Either team member may make the top level post for these two missions. You are free to face whatever hardships you desire while undertaking these missions, and whether or not you meet your quota is up to you. You will have the entirety of Day Twelve, but we are still on Hoitu'yunia until the end of Day Thirteen, so if you find yourself lost in the wilds and you have to rough it for the night, or you get kidnapped by hill people or something, feel free to have your time spill over. You will be found and brought back to the ship before we leave, though, so don't worry about being left behind.

[[Your comm badges will work here on the planet's surface, so if you run into serious trouble, you are welcome to call another character to your aid (provided they are cool with that), or a Redshirt can come lend a hand and possibly die, or whatever you feel will be the most fun for you. You are also welcome to encounter and NPC the Hoitu who will also be hunting/gathering in the area. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask a mod; we're still trying to suss out the best way to do future missions, so any and all feedback is welcome!]]

Stardate 58583.6

Good evening, crew, this is the captain. I hope you've all been enjoying our impromptu shore leave. As it turns out, the Hoitu'yunia have some technology that may be of great assistance to us during our journey home, however, of course we cannot expect something for nothing. The Hoitu'yunia who live on the coastline have asked for our assistance in negotiating for some much-needed supplies from the main colony, and in return they will give us the materials and information we need to integrate their technology into our own. I have agreed to assist them, and I am hoping for a bit of assistance from you, as well.

I am asking for some volunteers to help gather the resources that the coastal colony is in need of. Once I am able to negotiate terms from the core colony and we have permission to forage on their land, I will need some manpower to do just that. The ship is still being repaired even as we speak, and my crew have been working around the clock to ascertain the safety and integrity of our systems, so it is difficult to ask them to add to their workload. I am hoping that some of you displaced individuals will perhaps be willing to lend a hand. I know most of you are civilians, so I am not ordering anyone to do this job, but it would be a great service to myself and my crew to be able to delegate these tasks to some of you. This ship is your home for the time being, and you are my responsibility for as long as you are aboard it, and I will do everything I can to keep you safe and comfortable, but given our extreme shorthandedness, any help you can provide while you are with us would be very appreciated.

Anyone who is willing to lend their assistance for this mission, please send me a communiqué and let me know what skills you can offer. If you have any concerns regarding where you may be sent, due to personal sensitivities or physical limitations, please indicate this as well, and I will do my best to be accommodating. Negotiations will be taking place tomorrow, and as soon as agreeable terms have been reached, I will begin passing out assignments.

Thank you for your time. Palu out.

Planet: Hoitu’yunia, Class M planet
People: Hoitu

Welcome to your first planet, space explorers. The Illyria lands, somewhat roughly, on the planet, though considering what the ship has been through, things really go about as well as can be expected. Anyone who steps off the ship will find themselves on a seemingly endless beach, greeted by the smell of the sea and a warm breeze. Here, they will find the Hoitu people, and an interesting environment and with exciting locations to explore.

Characters: Martha Jones
Stardate: 58569.9
Location: Ship - Mess hall, observation lounge, science labs
Summary: Continuing to explore the ship.
Warnings: Nothing as yet, but will update as necessary.

Observation Lounge
In terms of places she'd unexpectedly ended up, this was far from the least welcome. Even so, Martha couldn't help but find her way to the observation lounge and stare out the window. For what seemed like the millionth time, she pulled out her mobile and dialed home, sighing when, yet again, failed to work. "Sorry Mum," she murmured.

Science Labs
At the very least, Martha could manage to learn things while stuck up here in space. She spent time in the science labs, looking at the various experiements that were running and asking the computer various questions. "Computer. What are the most common human viral illnesses at this point in time?" Perhaps a better question for sickbay, but as she wasn't part of Starfleet, she didn't want to be in teh way.

Mess Hall
The Continuing Saga of Tea. Martha had tried daily to get a decent tea. She was fairly certain everything the replicator gave her was tea... of a sort. But as of yet, nothing was familiar.

"Earl Grey," she asked. A teacup shimmered into place, and while the tea was NOT earl grey, she could clearly smell the peppermint. "You did it! Not quite! But close enough!"

So. Who the hell do I talk to around here about getting a job in the...uh. Engineering section.

Because they wear spiffy yellow shirts. Which is kind of my color. Mostly. I usually prefer some red splashed in there, but I'll forego the highlights if I can get the job.

Bee-Tee-Dubs, yes I blew out the lights on Deck 4 two days ago. No, it wasn't my fault, I swear. Hot Forehead Chick distracted me. And also she had some weird taser thing, I'm still not 100% convinced she didn't blow out the deck just to prove me wrong.

Stardate 58561.8: Day One

Now that you've all got your room assignments and communicators, it's time to explore this ship. Please check out the deck plans to figure out where you're going. You can read about some of the existing crew members you might run into here.

Even those of you who may feel right at home on a spaceship will find that the Illyria is definitely a bit... different. Mostly because she's kind of a wreck right now. Whatever it was that threw the ship all the way out here to wherever we are, it really did a number on the ship itself. There's a lot of damaged areas, and several of the ship's systems have been compromised. You'll find that the replicators don't always work right (I asked for hasperat and I got pok tar!?), the turbolifts are unusually persnickety (I said bridge, not engineering!), and the environmental controls in your quarters may not do as they're told (why is it snowing in Room 4J?). Several corridors are blocked by debris, and more often than not the lights are flickering if they're on at all.

So what will you do? Help clean up the mess in the hallways? Try some bizarre alien food in the mess hall? Try and infiltrate restricted areas to get a peek at the ship's systems? Feel free to make your own top level comment, and treat this as a big mingle. Get to know your new crewmates, explore your new home, make friends or enemies, and whatever you do, don't try the gagh. If you need the captain or the first officer, please let a mod know, but try and stick to threading with your fellow new recruits!

(Don't worry about the entry tags for the moment, they will be added shortly. Before we throw ourselves into missions on alien planets, we wanted everyone to have a chance to get to know one another, so please use this opening log as an opportunity to kick off some CR with crewmates and bunk buddies, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask a mod!)
